Excerpt:
Halfway through the movie, she was relaxed and buzzing from the alcohol when the doorbell rang. With a groan, she hit the pause button on the remote and hauled herself off the sofa, hoping like hell it wasn’t Clara and the girls coming to rescue her from her dismal reclusiveness. She wrapped the throw around her body and crossed to the foyer.
A glance through the glass inset in the door had her doing a double take.
Her hand gripped the chrome handle in the next second. Yanking the door open, her stomach jumped into her throat at the sight before her.
The very scintillating and sinfully delicious sight before her....
“You’re from the library.” She stared at the gorgeous hunk she’d noticed on three different occasions in the past week. The library around the corner from her office had become her favorite place to spend her lunch hour. It provided a mental escape from her number-crunching accounting job.
Lately, she’d been browsing the romance section, as part of her quest to add a little spice to her life.
With a sexy smile, the man standing on her welcome mat said, “I’m Edward Brockman.”
His dazzling blue eyes sparkled under the soft glow of the porch light. Rainwater dripped from strands of his stylish black hair, a result of the torrential downpour and his lack of an umbrella.
His full-length coat hung open, and he wore a dark gray suit and silver tie underneath. Refined features contradicted the line of two-day-old stubble along his strong jaw, giving him an edgy air. He appeared to be Humphrey Bogart and Clark Gable rolled into one, the perfect combination of Richard Blaine’s sophistication and Rhett Butler’s devilishness—the exact mixture needed to make her insides sizzle.
Drenched and grinning down at her with pearly white teeth and a tinge of fire in his eyes made Edward Brockman even more spectacular than when she’d seen him previously. A spark ignited low in her belly and her nerve endings hummed like livewires.
“You’re Kate Lindsey, right?” he asked in a deep tone as she stared—okay, gawked—at him.
“Yes, that’s right.”
“Then this is yours.” He handed over the book she’d checked out the day before.
She’d absentmindedly left the novel behind. Heat flooded her cheeks. “Thanks.” She took it from him. “I wondered where I’d left it.”
“Periodicals. You were sitting in the far corner by yourself.”
“Yes, I was.” The flush on her face oozed down her neck and spread across her chest, a contradiction to the cool weather. She pulled the chenille more tightly around her body and laughed nervously, cognizant of her state of near-undress. “I’m sorry, I wasn’t expecting company.”
“Nothing to worry about.” He had an easy tone, though the twinkle in his eyes hinted at mischievous thoughts. “I didn’t mean to disturb you, I just wanted to bring you the book. Gone with the Wind is one of my favorites, too. I thought you’d like to have it over the weekend.”
She glanced down at the title and then shot a look over her shoulder at the TV. Bogey’s Rick Blaine graced the screen and Rhett filled the pages of the book she held. She returned her gaze to Edward, a striking combination of the two characters standing before her.
“I, um....” Words escaped her. Her one-handed grip on the edges of the blanket slipped and the material slid over her bare shoulders, and down her arms.
In a slow, non-threatening way, he returned one side of the throw to its place. His fingers caressed her skin and she shivered.
“Don’t want to catch pneumonia.” He gave her a casual wink.
